Dear Male Population of the Younger Generation,

            Masculinity has changed and evolved as we have changed and have evolved as humans. Masculinity is not defined as it used to be. There are a lot of ideals still out there that were around in the fifties. Things like how most of the time the male needed to act like a male by doing things such as: playing sports, driving and working on fast and loud cars, and going to work. Looking years back, women were usually the stay at home moms, and were supposed to be seen and not heard, and were always expected to have dinner on the table when the husband came home. As we move on, these things have changed greatly.  Masculinity just is not the same as it used to be.

            Today a lot of men are perceived as “feminine” males. Being stay at home dads, being very “fashionable” and liking clothes, and even men who like other men. Back in the day this was definitely not acceptable, but our society has grown and evolved to accept this into our society. The stereotype of being “masculine” just is not as prominent as it used to be around fifty years ago. In today’s day you don’t have to be car smart, you do not have to get a “MANS” job, you can be into your clothes, you can stay at home as a father, and you don’t necessarily have to make the money of the house hold.

            A lot of this has to do with the power that most women have today. Fifty years ago women were barley aloud to go outside, let alone get jobs, fend for them selves, and even be thought about as a huge member of society. Men were the rulers and that’s just the way it was. Most women were looked down upon, almost as if they didn’t even exist, they were just there to please the males and not say a word. This has changed in an extreme way; Women now have a great amount of power. A lot of women are very independent, being treated just as equal as men, which is the way it should be. Being a male growing up in this time period I have a lot of respect for women and couldn’t imagine it any other way, and if I were in a position like that I would not want to be treated like a lesser class or even as a lesser value.  As Salam states, “the era of male dominance is coming to an end”(629). He is saying that men are losing their power and have been losing their power for years. Women are starting to come into control, and the way of living is changing. We see this is today’s society how the males are becoming more of the “stay at home moms” and the women are going to work, to make a living for the family. I believe that this is a good thing, women deserve the chance to be powerful and be in control. This doesn’t mean males are losing power doesn’t mean we are going to get into a bad position. It just means that it is okay to be a feminine male and have masculine women in our society.

                        Growing up I was always taught to be a “MAN”. I was taught to take out the garbage when I was told, mow the lawn, be able to work on my car, and have a good tough job that I could support a family. Having divorced parents there was a twist to this being a “MAN” stereotype. Being at my fathers a lot I always got that be a man speech; especially from my grandfather and there was no ifs, ands, or buts about how I was suppose to act and be the man. While I spent time at my mom’s house she would inform me that it was okay to be somewhat feminine if I really wanted to. I was torn between what the two of them were teaching me at the time, but as I grew up I found a good place in the middle. I knew that there were times I had to be the “MAN” but on the other hand there were times I could sit back and do the things I wanted to do, even if it weren’t the most masculine thing a typical man would do. That is just what today’s society has come to be.

            Sometimes it was weird for me to grow up and see guys around me that were growing up to be these feminine males that loved clothes, loved to shop, and sometimes were one of the girls. This is what is hard for the older generation to grasp, because when they were growing up this was in no way acceptable and definitely not okay to be like. A lot of the older generation does not accept the way things have changed, and it is very hard for them to change the ways that they have grown up knowing. Some have adapted to the new ways, but it is a great challenge to overcome and move on from what they were taught and were use to believing.

            Masculinity simply just is not the same as what it used to be, you do not have to be the main support of your wife, she can support you and that is an okay thing in today’s society. Men can be a stay at home father and that is just fine.  Knowing where we came from and who we are can make people a lot more comfortable in the feelings they are. Men don’t have to feel like they have huge shoes to fill they can make their own life and be the person they want to be. This helps us understand where we have come from, who and what we are. Ultimately, this helps us understand the differences we have and how we can overcome them.  I do believe that although this is directed towards males’ females can greatly benefit from this as well. Make them feel like they are welcomed in this society as well as the “feminine” male.

Title: “Two Ways a Woman Can Get Hurt”: Advertising and Violence

Author: Jean KilBourne

Topic: How advertising reflects common themes and roles in gender, ultimately shaping men and women into set roles. Woman are sexualized, abused and literally shot down in advertising.

Exigence: Women are reflected, and percieved in the wrong ways, thus influencing the young minds of our generation. 

Intended audience: Young women

Purpose: To eventually redefine how we advertise, make it less sexist and bias toward gender.

Response:  Kilbourne is saying this is not right, and I agree with here. This is not right to have these ads make men feel like they have more power then women do. This makes women all over the world put in some kind of danger, where most of the time they cannot feel safe. These ads are just plain dehumanizing, and wrong they are not capturing what is going on in the world, it is capturing what is wrong and making people believe that this is acceptable, but its not.

Exigence: to show the reader how and why the idea of Macho will no longer be around and how it is slowly disappearing from our world.

Intended   Audience: directed towards a  scholarly audience because it talks about why everything the writer claims is happening. The article is semi-informal

Purpose:  Demonstrate how our old idea  a man is slowly dissapearing. Men are no longer the primary breadwinners in American and Salam is pointing out that slowly that is how it will be around the world.

Claims: “The era of male dominance is coming to an end. “(page 629) Women will soon be the primary bread winners. Men and women will both had to adjust to a new social order where the two are equals.

 

Main Evidence: Salam states “The era of male dominance is coming to an end. “(page 629) From the first paragraph or so the reader can clearly see what the article will be about. Salam also states how the Great Depression did many of the same things that the Recession has done only that The New Deal was what saved Machismo then. He states that there is nothing like the new deal today, a political action that focused on creating jobs for men; and with our a New Deal like event happening the Macho will have to go. Salam talks about how there is no way to bring back the Macho because the jobs that sustained those ideas are no longer there and both men and women will have to adapt. Salam announces “We can expect the transition to be wrenching, uneven, and possibly very violent.” (page 636)

My Response:  This article is very credible. The article had no pathos or ethos in my opinion it was a very good example of a logical article using examples and information to explain Salams case.

   "Two ways a women can get hurt" by Jean Kilbourne is a short story about how ads have incorporated pornography, dehumanizing the women that are portrayed in these ads. In one of the ads a man is leaning over a girl and you cant tell if she is laughing or screaming, the only thing the ads says is NO. This is stating that the girl is saying no, but the guy is still going in for a kiss or what ever he is trying to do, she is saying something and the men doesn't listen, making this seem like this is alright.  These ads are creating a picture for people that men are more dominant and that when women say something they don't really mean it. Kilbourne states, " Men are encouraged to never take no for an answer, ad after ad girls and women don't really mean know when they say it, women are only teasing when they resist mens' advances"(579). This talks about how  this is dehumanizing to women and this is giving the general public the wrong idea of what is right and what is wrong. This gives men the feeling that women are on a lower level then they are and that then increases they idea that domestic violence is acceptable  Kilbourne explains " The biggest problem for most women is simply surviving at home, domestic is the leading cause of female injury of almost every country in the world and is typically ignored by the state or only erratically punished" (585). These violent images that are shown on these ads increases this feeling that men are dominant and women are lesser. This is absolutely, 100% not OK. Kilbourne is saying this is not right, and I agree with here. This is not right to have these ads make men feel like they have more power then women do. This makes women all over the world put in some kind of danger, where most of the time they cannot feel safe. These ads are just plain dehumanizing, and wrong they are not capturing what is going on in the world, it is capturing what is wrong and making people believe that this is acceptable, but its not. These ads need to change so that women stop getting hurt and men stop feeling more empowerment then women. Everyone need to be treated like equals no one gender lesser than the other.

Pass Proposition 30

California is in a declining state of education and public safety. This means that the economy is not doing so well, and education and public safety are failing. This is why Governor Jerry Brown has proposed Proposition 30. This proposition is going to give about $6 billion to schools and public safety. This money is going to disperse 89 percent to K-12 schools and 11 percent to community colleges. The overflow will go to public safety including: police, fire, parks and recreation, fish and game, flood control, and law enforcement programs such as jails. The way they would like to achieve this goal is by raising taxes in the state. Income tax for people who make $250,000 or more a year would increase anywhere from one to three percent and sales tax for the lesser would increase by ¼ cent. The sales tax would last for four years and the income tax would last for six years. If this measure does not pass then we will be facing more cuts, approximately $4.8 billion in “trigger cuts” on top of our already horrible public safety and education system. This could actually shut down schools around us.  When Jerry Brown was elected governor we were in debt approximately $25 million. Now prop 30 will help our school and public safety, but it will also help us get out of this debt we have been in for so long. According to the LA times “Proposition 30, Brown's proposal for a temporary increase in income and sales taxes, would fill that hole.” This means that even when this proposition is over we will still be on the right track to having a great educational system and public safety system. This is exactly what we need as a state.

Proposition 30 needs to pass to help our educational system. We cannot afford to keep having the budget cuts we do in the educational system. We need this prop to pass because we need that money to grow as a state and even as a country. Right now schools all over California are failing because kids are jam packed into these classrooms not being able to learn anything because of the teacher cuts made. At the community college level student are not able to get the classes they need because either the waitlists are completely full, or they just don’t offer that class any more because they are so understaffed. Classes are not just failing, but schools are failing as well there is not enough staff to keep some of the tutoring sessions open, also library time has been cut in half. It’s making our community suffer as a whole. Its not encouraging people to go to school to better them self’s, its actually making more people drop out because they are tired of the way the system is run. Having this prop pass could help the school systems a great deal. First, if this passes more classes could be available around community colleges, as well as more teachers. Tuition costs and other costs could go down allowing more people to go to school. We all want that "American Dream" whether it’s a myth or not. We would not be able to achieve this with having an even worse school system by taking more money out. This proposition needs to pass to better our community that we live in.

On top of all that education, we need this to pass for our public safety systems. Jails are over crowded, police and fire are understaffed, and programs that help the people in need are just dropped out of this system because of this economic hardship. Having this money will give people who are in prison a chance to change their lives by getting back on their feet, by getting a job, and by going to school. Having jails overcrowded and no money going to them, forces judges to let convicts go back into society and having to cut police will not give us the protection that we expect, and possibly need. On top of it all people that need help will not get what they need in the time that they need it. All the other public programs that keep our society running will also fail; making our economy crash harder then it is now. If prop 30 does not pass it could be devastating for our economy.

Critics argue that a tax increase has come at the wrong time, considering the economy. It would make the state, whose income taxes are already extremely high, even higher. LA times states “They also argue that the state's budget troubles stem from out-of-control spending, not a shortage of revenue.” Which means that it doesn’t matter where the money is going to, the government will still just spend that money and put us in even a bigger whole. People against prop 30 also state that the Proposition is kind of shady, it is very unclear of what in going on in the prop and where the money is going. Almost like a shell game, the way they will move money in and out of the account, not guaranteeing the money to any one person. I understand this but honestly, they are just worried about what has happened in the past. The unchangeable things of our past don’t matter.

I myself connect to this subject because I am currently a college student at a community college. This matters to me because this prop will affect me a great deal, by making classes more available so I can move on in life. I am in college because I want to better my education, but that can’t happen if they still make budget cuts and remove classes.  We need to be looking at the future, the future that my parents want me to have and the future I want my children to have after me. There will be no educational future if this proposition does not pass because there will not be enough funding from all the trigger cuts to keep all the kids and student in schools and safe. We need this proposition to pass to increase jobs, education and our economy as a whole.

All the other public programs that keep our society running will also fail and make our economy crash harder then it is now. If prop 30 does not pass it could be devastating for our economy.

Critics argue that a tax increase has come at the wrong time, considering the economy. It would make the state, whose income taxes are already extremely high, even higher. LA times states “They also argue that the state's budget troubles stem from out-of-control spending, not a shortage of revenue.” Which means that it doesn’t matter what the money is going to the government will still just spend that money and put us in even a bigger whole. People against prop 30 also state that the Proposition is kind of shady, it is very unclear of what in going on in the prop and where the money is going. Almost like a shell game, they way they will move money in and out of the account, not guaranteeing the money to any one person.

I understand this but honestly, they are just worried about what has happened in the past. The unchangeable things of our past don’t matter. I myself connect to this subject because I am currently a college student at a community college. This matters to me because this prop will affect me a great deal, by making classes more available so I can move on in life. I am in college because I want to better my education, but those cants happen if they still make budget cuts and remove classes.  We need to be looking at the future, the future they my parents want me to have and the future I want my children to have after me. There will be no educational future if this proposition does not pass because there will not be enough funding to keep all the kids and student in schools and safe. We need this proposition to pass to increase jobs, education and our economy as a whole.  

Proposal

Title: Why Proposition 30 should pass.

Author: I am a 19 year old 2nd year college student. Currently attending a community college.

Date: This is during a time of economic hardship and we need this to help our state as a whole.

Topic: Proposition 30 is a Prop that raises income taxes for those making over $250,000 and an increase in sales tax for the lesser. The money will go towards education, public safety, and community programs all of which have received cuts in the prior years.

Exigence: I am writing this paper to state my opinion on why this prop should pass. Its extremely hard to get the classes you want due to all the budget cuts. Its hard to be motivated to even go to school when you can get the classes you want. On top of it, it hard to pay for school when the budget cuts raise the tuition. We need this to pass so we can get more people in school and have a better life essentially. 

Intended Audience: This paper is meant for registered voters and students in California  I want all these people to know that this proposition is and why everyone should vote for it.  

Logos: The logical reasoning that I will use in my op-ed is that proposition 30 should  pass. Prop 30 is a  proposition that is supposed to give money to k-12 schools, community colleges, and public safety. It increases tax dollars, income tax to people who make over 250,000 for seven years and increase sales tax for all the lesser. Prop 30 guarantees that money will go to public safety, and to public schools. This is crucial to the college life. More classes, more teacher and better education.

Ethos: I myself connect to this subject because I am currently a college student at a community college. My opinion matters because this prop will effect me a great deal. I am in college because I want to better my education, but that cant happen if they still make budget cuts and remove classes. It's really important to know about this as a college student. Researching this I feel like I am very qualified to explain the Prop.

Pathos: Having this prop pass could help the school systems a great deal. First if  this passes more  classes could be available around the community colleges, and more teachers. Tuition costs and other costs could go down allowing more people to go to school. We all want that "American Dream" whether its a myth or not. We would not be able to achieve this with having an even worse school system by taking more money out. This proposition needs to pass to better our community that we live in.

The LA times states that is prop 30 passes the state will be able to enroll more students into schools. If proposition 30 passes the CSU system will be less likely to have those standard cuts and will have the funding to send out acceptance letters instead of the letters that tell those students they didn't make it into school. If prop 30 does not pass there will be more cuts to the CSU system and there will be more people who will not be able to attend school. If it fails schools could lose up to 250 millions dollars in state funding.

Reading Response # 1

In the "Report of the Massachusetts Board of Education" written in 1848 Horace Mann talks about five different types of education. Physical, Intellectual, Political, Moral, and Religious. What Mann is trying to say is by developing these types of educations better it could eventually better our society. He wants to push these five types of education in every school because he believes that this is the ticket to help make our society run better. This Article was written for the Massachusetts Legislature. 

When Mann talks about the Physical education, he wants people/students to learn the reasons why we should be healthy lives, instead of creating our death bed sooner than later."To diffuse a knowledge of these beautiful and beneficent laws of health and life throughout the length and breadth of the state; to popularize them; to make them, in the first place, the common acquisition of all, and , through education and custom, the common inheritance of all, sop that the healthful habits naturally growing out of their observance shall be inbred in the people...,"(118). Mann explains intellectual education as removing poverty and having more equality in the educational school system. He wants everyone to be able to get the same education available to the middle and even upper-class students. "The distance between the two extremes of society is lengthening, instead of being abridged"(119). What he means by political is that he feels that people living in a society should understand and know what is going on in their government that they live in. They should get the know the real truth instead of the lies that the government actually feeds us. "Yet they must, if citizens of a republic, understand something of the true nature and functions of the government under which they live"(121). Moral education as Mann explains, is a necessity of social existence. He is saying that you need moral values and family ties to explain who you are, and have something to fight and work for. " A community without a conscience would soon extinguish itself"(123). When he says religious he means that people should have a religious back ground whether they practice that or not. He just thinks that if you actually going to practice it you should learn about it. " no community will ever be religious without a religious community"(124).

I really enjoyed reading this article because I agree with a lot of what he says. The three parts I liked the most is the most were the intellectual, Political, and Moral. First the intellectual because this deals with creating equals in society which I agree with a great deal, everybody should be granted the same education no matter what house hold or where ever in the world you come from. Second, the political, we all chose to live in the country we live in and should be granted the freedom to know what is actually happening in that society  Having lies fed at us is not something that we deserve. Lastly the moral, everybody needs there morals and values to even survive. If you don't know where you came from and having nothing worth fighting for whats the point. Morals is one of the most important things in my opinion because you need to value the things in life that got you to where you are today. Teaching all five of these in schools should be required and the fact that he stated this in 1848 and some have still not been enforced as much yet is a little upsetting.  

Week One

1. I believe that "Para Teresa" is written in both English and Spanish is because is connects on more of an emotional level. Its tells the story the way it really was. Lets the reader get a good understanding of what is going on in that exact moment in time.  If the whole story or poem were to be in all English it would not make as much sense, it would just seem like another bathroom fight in elementary school. This is not what this was, this was a story about to Mexican- American women who had strong beliefs about who they were and where they came from. Having the story in two different languages really pulls the whole story together.   You really get the detail and what was really going on. Some may not be able to understand it but it connects to every reader in a personal way. I know when i read "Para Teresa" Having written both ways really made it seem realistic and like I was there. You get the intensity level of the purpose of the story. It really brings their culture into the mix. This story had a lot to do with the culture they came from and their heritage and having the two languages intermingled in this really help explain that culture.

                   2. The author in "Para Teresa" writes this story when she is 28 years old. I think she wrote this story because she had a turning point in her life. something must have triggered this. She talks about how after all these years she still remembers this girl and can call her, her sister. There had to be something in the aurthors life that triggered this childhood memory. We all have this same experience all the time. For her she went back to this moment in time when this fight happened and was now finally able to get over it. In some sence she seemed like she regretted the whole thing.The narrator has a greater understanding of Teresa because she is older now more mature and realizes that the little things like this don't matter. They are from the same heritage and she knew that she would have rather stuck with her then to fight with her and this she has regretted. She has  dewelled on the past and as she got older she has realized that there are a lot more important thing in life then to fight or argue about what is right and what is wrong in life. She realizes that things like this don't matter, what really matters is her roots and where she came from. 

I Am

I am Jerry Bayless. I am 19 years ild and have been going to cabrillo for a year now. Im not to sure what I want to do, but I think Im going to work for a business degree. Eventually I would like to move to San Diego and go to school down there. In my free time I like to work on my car and skateboard. I work well with other people thats what I could bring to this class. I have a good outlook and try not to be to negative. I enjoy the little things in life.
